WASHINGTONIAN FEATURE SYLVANSIDE WEDDING

November 10, 2019 by sylvanside Leave a Comment

Check out our Washingtonian Feature about G+J’s wedding. We were excited to be part of Geneva and Jason’s bohemian style wedding at Sylvanside Farm. Read below and follow the link to the article by Washingtonian.

G+J wedding in Washingtonian feature

Geneva Slye and Jason Berti put a modern twist on their bohemian wedding by opting for King Protea blooms, translucent ghost chair seating, and other contemporary details. The couple met while working a summer job at a hobby shop in Chantilly, and dated 13 years before tying the knot at Sylvanside Farm. “After dating so long, we decided that when the time came to get married, we would make the mutual decision,” says Geneva. “There was no proposal, we just picked a date and went for it!” So the couple, who now live in LA, decided to bring a trendy West Coast vibe to their Northern Virginia wedding. From their teepee-inspired altar to the bride’s asymmetrical dress, details of Geneva and Jason’s boho-chic wedding are perfect inspiration for anyone planning a boho big day of their own.

The photography was Geneva’s number one priority when it came to planning her bohemian wedding. “I knew it was the only thing I would truly have to cherish forever after the wedding day,” she says.

To match her modern, bohemian wedding style, Geneva wore a trendy asymmetrical satin gown with ruching detailing. She also opted for a relaxed hairstyle with her locks pulled partially back into a fishtail braid.

When Geneva first laid eyes on Jason back in high school she knew it was love at first sight. “I nicknamed him Jason ‘beautiful’ Berti,” says Geneva.

Geneva’s bouquet was a total showstopper. It featured a King Protea, cascading orchids, and garden roses.

Geneva orchestrated a relaxed, but colorful bridal-party look by inviting her bridesmaids to wear a dress of their choice. Groomsmen also gave off an easy going vibe with the help of white button down shirts paired with suspenders and khaki dress pants.

Geneva’s favorite detail were the acrylic ghost chairs that were used for both the ceremony and reception.

Fun fact: The venue is located across the road from Geneva’s childhood home.

There's no way we could have arrived at this moment without the unstoppable, unforgettable, undeniable love of all the couples and guests who have said yes to love - yes to dancing - yes to strolling through the fields, arm in arm without a care in the world.

Proud to remember the man who was not afraid to lead the people toward truth and justice, to stand for what is right rather than follow the status quo. May we continue to follow his lead, and the guidance of so many other unsung activists, as we structure our every day toward justice and love.

Dreaming up the best year yet! It's hard to Dreaming up the best year yet!

It's hard to believe when we got to the land just three years ago, it was in foreclosure. There was an offer on the land to take down the existing buildings - including our Poplar Barn, which is the largest in the county and built in the 1800's.
The plan? To put in a cluster of new houses.

The land had fallen wild, and no one had lived here for many years. The buildings were covered in vines (we're talking many thousands of dollars, just for vine removal), and we worked many nights and days without rest, just to get it up and running again.

And now, to think that we've had our 90th wedding and all 5 star reviews.

Every building has been rebuilt (by our in-house woodshop) by our co-owner and Jack-of-all-trades, Jeff, who grew up just down the street in Bluemont and was trained in his trade just miles away.

We stocked the pond with fish and have been attracting chimney swifts to create ecological balance. We encourage bats and pollinators, foregoing use of chemicals on the land, even when that's the easy option. We aim to keep the water from the spring-fed wells that charge our ponds cleaner than it was before it sprang naturally from the ground.

We foster Milking Devons, Clydesdales, and heritage breed guinea hogs to help us bring back the land in a way that reflects the Scottish ancestors who founded Sylvanside in the 1700's. Even a ring-tailed pheasant has started popping by lately, and has posted up near our hand-built chicken house to stay safe.

Our hope, our wish, our intention, is for every one who comes on the property to feel this safety. To feel respite amongst the constant development, the whirlwind that has been this year, and this time. We strive to stay true to this spirit of integrity as we bring the land back to health - keeping it as resilient as possible so that when you, and your families, stroll down the drive, you feel it to your bones.
